Nice article with many useful ideas! I can't say that I totally agree with all you have suggested here, but there are a few relevant suggestions you have highlighted that can be quite useful on natural health and related topics. Definitely keep providing more recommendations on this topic and related topics, as there are many out there like me who are trying to get to know the ups and downs.

We have 4 small-breed rescued pups, 3 of which have health issues. When I ask our veterinarians (one older gentleman, two young women) about diet all I get is a deer in the headlights look. I feel as if I am working without a net when it comes to replacing their diet with home cooked food. Here are the issues we are facing:

Puppy (Bichon) gets "stud tail" like lesions on his tail, top of his head and along his spine area when he eats anything containing wheat or soy. He also has red tear stains under his eyes, which seem to be related to seasonal allergies.

Spanky (Yorkie/Bichon) had a severe urinary tract infection at the time of rescue, and crystals in his urine a year later. No stones. He has problems with anal gland secretions that we take him to the vet for every few weeks (this has not responded to pumpkin and ground flax seed added to his diet).

Daisy (Bichon) has idiopathic epilepsy that is not well controlled, even on state-of-the-art human antiepileptic drugs. She tends to get tracheo-bronchitis and since a UTI has struvite crystals in her urine. She loves to eat chicken jerky treats, which are most likely too much protein in regard to the crystals.

We have been feeding Nutro Natural Choice Weight Control for the past two years, mixing it with well-cooked turkey, chicken or white fish and canned pumpkin. This addresses the wheat/soy allergy and stool bulk issues, but not the struvite and oxatate crystals. Is there one diet that we can use that will address these different issues? Can we eliminate the kibble entirely with a brown rice-based home cooked diet? Thanks for whatever ideas you can offer.

My 10 year old DSH male cat has had a problem with a skin condition which erupts on his ears and nose when the weather gets hot (May-June) and then goes away when the weather cools down (Oct-Nov). Initially cortisone shots worked wonderfully (2 or 3 a year). Then last year he developed transitional diabetes and my vet is now extremely reluctant to give him any more steroid shots. The diabetes resolved after a few months of insulin shots. I am dreading next summer! Is there a supplement I can give him?

my two beautiful chow chows were fine...the odd scratch here and there until i took them for a grooming!! they have gone crazy. they scratch constantly and the one has developed sores as a result. i have started giving them barleylife powder and in a day the sores closed over and the scratching in slowing down. hope they will be back to normal soon! wonder....is it an allergy to the shampoo, did they pick up a nasty at the parlour? anyone else with a similar situation?

My cat Ernie has terrible allergies to fleas and other various pollens etc. I give him shots weekly, which seems to help. When he's late or the weather is bad, and he starts to eat his legs and feet (so long, pants...) and rub the hair off his face, i use rescue remedy cream. It is soothing, and as he licks everything off, he just gets a dose of rescue remedy.
